Washington State Parks — built for exploration

Riverside State Park encompasses 10,000 acres along the Spokane and Little Spokane Rivers northwest of Spokane, protecting the most extensive river-canyon natural area remaining within a major urban metropolitan region in the Pacific Northwest. The Bowl and Pitcher area's dramatic basalt formations were created by ancient volcanic eruptions and sculpted by the same Ice Age floods that shaped the Channeled Scablands to the south, creating a river canyon of exceptional geological drama within city limits. The Little Spokane River Natural Area within the park is recognized as one of eastern Washington's finest birding locations, with the quiet river and surrounding wetlands supporting nesting ospreys, kingfishers, and seasonal concentrations of migrating waterfowl.

🗺️

Bowl and Pitcher area sites (1–40) near the distinctive basalt formations and Spokane River are the most scenic and fill first. Equestrian sites are available in a dedicated loop for horse camping. Sites near the river are best for scenery; upper sites have more shade and privacy. A surprisingly wild feeling despite being within Spokane's city limits. The 9-mile trail system through the park is excellent for cycling.
